Capy’s been posting too many serious topics around here (Iraq and inequality and all), and I take TS’ lead here to blog about something lighter in vein…Of course very little compares to watching a puppy die of pneumonia…
So here’re some observations on things happening in the crazy, cool orient…
Like most living in America, I’ve been using a lot of my leisure time in front of the idiot box…With the ACC finals pitting the great Tarheels against the inferior Wolfpacks, one wonders whether any country can match American exceptionalism when it comes to college sports…I guess the chinks (the real ones from Formosa) have given us a run for our money though…
The latest college sport in Zhongxing University? One handed bra opening! Yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like…Here’s the whole story from The Far Eastern Economic Reveiw:
“Via Apple Daily Taiwan, we learn of a new college sport — one-handed bra opening.
Zhongxing
University students staged a race to open 15 brassieres worn by masked fellow students. Sadly for
Taiwan’s would-be Lotharios, it turns out the women were much faster, no doubt due to “home field advantage.” Champion Li Cuifang clocked in at 21 seconds, and she didn’t seem to think it was such a big deal: “This is my first time opening underwear one-handed, I didn’t think it would be so quick!” Among the men, the nimblest lingerie liberator was Zhang Tingjia, who stripped his classmates in 38 seconds. Practice, gentlemen, practice.”
Now that’s something, huh? I think I’ve had a very deprived college experience now…
On a different note, Korean cinema is much better than I thought it’d be…If y’all want to check out a foreign flick (and have nothing better to do), do go see The Host…Very well made…One of Han cinemas blockbuster productions (playing in DC theaters right now)…The other flick I found fascinating was a Netflix rental: 3 Iron…Haven’t seen anything like it…Call it crazy, cool, high concept…Quite post-modern in a good sense (if that’s not a contradiction in essence, actually let’s not call it post-modern, but just different)…
Speaking of post-modern, here’s my last recommendation for the day: Communications from elsewhere (or as previously called ‘The postmodernism generator’), http://www.elsewhere.org/pomo/402532945
Simply ingenious, and a most effective way to demonstrate the crap that goes by the name of post-modernism….

Definitely agree about Korean cinema. Avoid “The Duelists” at all costs, though. Granted, I watched it without subtitles, but I was disappointed on a much, much deeper level than plot: the fight scenes sucked. “My Sassy Girl” is another Korean film that I really enjoyed (noted also on Pacify This)

Benji, that postmodern generator thing is pure classic. I thought it was for real for the first couple of paragraphs (that’s how far some academia has descended).
Regarding the bra thing, yes, one-handed bra-opening is indeed challenging. Good thing Mrs. Tequila Socrates doesn’t wear one.
